Things I learned from Paul Rand: 6 – Warhol Interview
Here is a little tale I heard from Paul Rand, with possible historical implications.
Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol is an icon. He doesn’t need much explanation. As American visual artist, film director, and producer, he was a leading figure in the pop art movement and is regarded as one of the most important American artists of the latter half of the 20th century.
The Interview
One day, when I was working with Paul, something about Andy Warhol came up. Perhaps a design layout we were working on reminded me of him. Then randomly, Paul said when he was working at an ad agency (which I assume it was William H. Weintraub Agency, where he worked from 1941-1955), he interviewed Warhol.
He said Warhol’s work was very good, but he was turned down because they didn’t have an opening at the time.
I couldn’t stop but wonder what would have happened if Andy Warhol ended up taking a job to work under Paul Rand. I’m pretty sure art history would have been different. But Paul made it sound like it was just another day at the office.
