Dirty Dozen (+1)

Dirty Dozen (+1)

Dirty Dozen (+1) was a project started by few denimheads (including me) on a travel and fashion forum called Superfuture. Inspired by the movie, “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” our idea was to pick one pair of jeans, and have twelve of us pass it around the world for a year, and document how it fades and ages over time.

The high-end denim store, Blue in Green Soho gladly sponsored the project for us, and provided us with a pair of Japanese selvedge denim, Evisu 2000 Lot No.1.

The name Evisu is based on “Ebisu,” a Japanese god of luck, fishing, and trade. When I was tasked to design a special patch for this project, I took their Evisu head they used on their regular patch, added a body to the god and had him sit on top of the world.

Blue in Green Soho also commissioned a local artist to custom paint number “13” in Japanese, as well as Evisu’s signature “Gull Logo” on the back pockets. The pair became a true original.

The Traveling Pants

It started in New York, where I was the first one to wear the jeans, then it went across the US, then to Europe, then Asia, and back to the U.S.

We ended up having a thirteenth person to receive the jeans back in New York. Hence, instead of just Dirty Dozen, we had to add the (+1), and the number 13 on the pocket.

Wear and Tear

It was fun to document different people wearing the same jeans in different places around the world, and watch how they aged over time. All and all, it was a memorable project.
