Things I learned from Paul Rand: 24 – Charcoal Brown

Paul Rand definitely lived an interesting life and achieved many great things. He often had random amazing stories (like that time Andy Warhol interviewed to work for him). But one of his very random accomplishments stuck with me: He said he invented the color, “charcoal brown.”

IIRC, he said he created that color name for some clothing company when he was working at the advertising agency. I’m guessing it was at the William Weintraub Advertising Agency, but no clue now which client it was for. Maybe Lee Hats, Stafford Fabrics, or one of these:

Paul Rand's ad for Kaufmann's
Paul Rand's ad for Disney Hats

They’re everywhere

He told me about this accomplishment randomly one day, in the tone of like, “Yeah, I did that too.” Nonetheless, every time I see anything with the charcoal gray color, I’m reminded of him.
