Try to think of a logo more like a flag than an illustration. Often, people try to have a logo say too much.

An introduction to a series of blog posts about Phil Mimaki’s experience working for the master designer Paul Rand at his own house. This is how it all started.

As intense as he was to try to get exactly what he wanted in design layouts, a phrase Paul Rand often used was, surprisingly, “close enough.”

One time, I thought I had a cool logo idea for IBM. When I showed it to Paul Rand, he made one remark that instantly made it better.

Paul Rand was commissioned to redesign American Express’ identity program in the early 90s. It was an interesting lesson in corporate design.

Paul Rand once told me there was a lot of artists more talented than him. One of his favorite contemporary artist was Henryk Tomaszewski.

Back in 1994, Paul Rand made a prediction about how computers will change our lives. However, it doesn’t seem to be coming true.
